Somerset sign Chris Gayle for Twenty20 in 2012

Somerset have signed West Indies player Chris Gayle for this year's Friends Life Twenty20 campaign after talks with Middlesex had fallen apart.
Somerset signed Gayle for this year's Friends Life Twenty20 competition in the hope that he break their duck of losing 3 finals in a row in the competition. Last year, Somerset lost to Leicestershire Foxes to win the competition to continue this record. He will replace Kieron Pollard as their overseas player for the club as Pollard is more into the international duties now with West Indies.

Chris Gayle was in talks with Middlesex for the Twenty20 competition but their interest was moved into an overseas fast bowler and therefore, talks fell apart.

Chris Gayle has an exceptional record in Twenty20s. He is the only player to score 5 centuries in Twenty20 cricket and shares the record for the fastest Twenty20 International century in 50 balls with Brendan McCullum.

The 32 year old will strengthen the batting line up of Somerset with Craig Kieswetter, Marcus Trescothick, Peter Trego, Roelof van der Merwe and James Hildreth.

Chris Gayle says "I am delighted to be heading to Somerset this summer. They are a great club and hopefully I can make a key contribution to their T20 campaign this year."

Somerset's director of cricket also said;  "Chris is a tremendously exciting player and one of the people who would get into any World T20 XI. He is a tremendous all-rounder; his batting is outstanding, he bowls and can open the attack with his off-spinners and he is also a brilliant fielder, so we are absolutely delighted."
