Somerset and Kolkata go through to the group stages despite losing

Somerset breezed through Kolkata to secure a second win thanks to some out-bowling and batting well Kolkata got through despite being pushed to the brink of elimination due to the run rate set by Ruhunu in the previous match.

Somerset batted first on a fairly good pitch for both sides, but it was Somerset who got to a blistering start with 27 going into the first wicket in 3 overs in which Chris Jones (14) got out thanks to an edge that was bowled by Lee. Van der Merwe and Trego were putting a big stand and at 56-1 in 8 overs, Trego started to shift the gears and gone for acceleration of the run-rate with some big hits with his partner. Somerset knew had to go against the spin attack of Abdulla, Pathan and Shakib al Hasan as well as for the lack of pace in the bowling from Kallis and Bathia with the exception of Brett Lee. Van der Merwe eventually got out for 40 when the score was up to 99-2 in 12 overs. The damage was done as Trego reached his 70 in 61 balls as the middle order did the rest of the work and got Somerset to a good total of 166-6.

Kolkata had to get 152 runs to get to the group stages of the competition to get their run-rate higher than Ruhuna's in the other table. Kolkta had a bad start getting to 10-2 in 2 overs with Bisla getting run out and Kallis getting caught from the bowling of Murali Kartik. Goswami and Tiwary looked like getting a big partnership with their intelligent, risk-free batting when Goswami got caught and an over later Tiwary as well by being clean bowled by Max Waller. Ten doeschate was ready with the bat and was hitting cleanly of the bat but not with Yusuf Pathan who is know for his massive strking abilities only got 12 in 13 balls and getting out by Suppiah who was finally rewarded for his bowling despite conceding 19 runs of his 2 overs. 97-5 in 13 overs, it looked all to do for Kolkata and when Ten Doeschate began to hit the accelerator pedal in the run-rate to get to the total with partnerships with Shakib al Hasan and Rajat Bhatia, it was looking good. 150-7 in 19.1 overs, Kolkata obviously gone for the going to the CLT20 group stages rather than for the win and with Ten Doeschate in until they reached past 152 with singles, the Bengali crowd were celebrating while Kolkata eased the next 2 balls to lose by 11 runs at 155-8 but was a close shave having to face at one stage 51 runs in 5 overs.
