The whole cricket world was shocked when it was announced in the early afternoon of a Monday that Tom Maynard has been found dead. He was pronounced dead on a railway track near Wimbledon Park railway station at around 5am in the morning. This was later confirmed with Metropolitan Police and his respective club, Surrey.
The shock spread all over the cricketing world including the England team that have just arrived at the Kia Oval to be stunned and broken by the news of the passing of Tom Maynard at his home ground and that the flags in the Oval were at half-mast as well.
The Independent Police Complaints Commission are investigating the result of his death and the handling of the case, only minutes after he got stopped by police for speeding as early as 4:15am in the morning.
Surrey's T20 game against Hampshire on Wednesday in the Oval has been postponed but England's ODI in the same venue is expected to go ahead.
Tom Maynard is the son of Matthew Maynard who was a destructive middle-order batsman playing for Glamorgan and England Test and ODIs. Like father like son it really was as Maynard was considered one of England's finest young cricketing talents being also a destructive middle-order batsman that fitted well to T20s and 40 over games as well adapting to the longer form of the game.
He joined Surrey in 2010 after Surrey had appointed long-term friend Rory Hamilton-Brown as captain of the side being the youngest captain of a county cricket club in history.
One time playing for his home village in Millfield, he batted left-handed (being a right-handed batsman) and got himself a century which displays the amount of talent he has.
5181 runs in in 185 matches he ever played with his highest ever scored being 140 recently against Worcestershire in an LV County Championship match.
With players around the world giving tribute, Michael Vaughan summed up the feelings of fans all over the world on Twitter:
"Thoughts are with Matt Maynard and his family.. Words can't describe the Terribly sad news that Tom Maynard has died aged 23..."
